Internet Marketing

Your site is done and deployed to the internet. Then you search for it on the search engines and find out that you can't find it unless you type your own domain directly in the address bar of your browser. You ask yourself; What's going on? How do I get visitors to come to my site? How do I tell the search engines that I am part of the internet? How many visitors come to visit my site every month?

The above questions can be answered with a touch of internet marketing. There are a number of things you can do to improve your site's visibility with the search engines. The more visible your site is, the more traffic you will get.

Internet marketing is any or all of the following disciplines:

  1. SEO - Search Engine Optimization
    1. On-page optimization
    2. Off-page optimization
    3. On-site link structure
  2. SEM - Search Engine Marketing
    1. Link building
    2. PPC or pay-per-click
    3. Social Networking
    4. Social Bookmarking
    5. Bloggin

The best results are obtained when a combination of the above disciplines are utilized. Keep in mind that results are not nescesarity instantaneous. Some marketing efforts may take some time to take effect. Regardless of the initiative, you would want to benchmark your site performance and measure it again after the marketing effort is implemented. It is only through this method of benchmarking and measurement that you will be able to determine if you are getting the desired results.

Your search engine optimization efforts should yield you higher rankings with the search engines. Higher rankings usually correlate with higher traffic or more visitors to your site. Although nobody can guarantee you first place in the search rankings (and we would be wary of any company that does so) you should none the less optimize your site for the search engines. Opitimization is not a one time effort but instead a contineous endaevour.

On-page optimization relates to all the optimization efforts that can be carried out on your own web pages. This include page content, keywords and links to other pages on your site. Since you are the site owner, you have control over these changes.

Off-page optimization are those efforts to get higher rankings through inbound link building. Inbound links are those links from other sites or external web pages. You do not have full control over these since you are relying on other site owners to put a link on their pages that point to yours. Some of these links are spontaneous, that is a web site owner finds your site and feels it is a good resource for their readers so he/she adds a link to his/her web pages. Another way to get a link to your site is by asking the site owner or webmaster to add your link. If you ask for a link, you may be able to specify how that link should be added to maximize your page's optimization. Off-page optimization is more than just spammy link exchanges. Well crafted link building campaings will yield good results pushing your site higher in the search engine ranking. Spammy link exchanges will simply do nothing for your site or will pull your site lower in the rankings.

Search Engine Marketing are those activities that are designed to drive traffic to your site from Social Networking communities such as Facebook, mySpace, Technorati, etc. Pay-per-Click marketing is another method to drive traffic to your site. This however will require a monetary investment as for each click you will have to pay an agreed amount. Pay-per-click if left unattended can be very costly, done right it can be a well worth marketing vehicle that drives sales and leads.
